Genesis Lesson 1
In the Beginning
In the beginning! The first three words of the Holy Bible. The Bible is like no other book, it is the written Word of the Living God who created the universe and everything in it. The Holy Bible was commissioned by God to be His written testament of who He is and the nature of our relationship with Him. The Holy Bible is unique in that it provides us with an account of our past, present and future relationship with God. The Bible is a collection of 66 books commissioned by God, who chose specific human authors and guided those authors to write what He wanted His people to know and understand. The Book of Genesis is the first book in the Bible and was originally written by Moses in Hebrew and was titled, 'Bereshith', meaning 'in the beginning'. In the third century before Christ the Bereshith was translated into Greek and given the title 'Genesis' meaning 'origin, source or generation'.
Jesus in Genesis
The first verse in the Holy Bible is a profound revelation that underpins the nature of who God is and who we are, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (KJV) A simple statement of fact, God is The Creator of literally everything, including me, you and everyone who came before us or will come after us. The chapter continues to reveal the history of creation, step by step. Before we move on however, let's pause to consider a very important fact. When we read "God created", let's clarify that the nature of the One God is a unity of three persons. The triune God is, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All three persons of the God Head are coequal, coeternal and consubstantial.
That profound revelation places Our Saviour Jesus firmly in Genesis!
The Word is Jesus
It's a mistake to consider the Holy Bible as two distinct books that can be understood in isolation. It's more helpful to consider the testimony of God before Christ and after Christ. This can lead to confusion because as we established in the previous segment, Jesus is eternal and therefore there isn't a time before Jesus. Let's clarify therefor that when we say before Christ, we are saying before God became flesh in the person of Jesus who we call Christ (anointed one). We find clarity in the first 10 verses of Johns Gospel. John who was guided by the Holy Spirit to write a testimony of Jesus as commissioned by God.
